Connectivity guide

Your office phone is an app now (and that's good)

VoIP runs your business phone line over the internet instead of copper. Here's what that means in practice, when Teams alone is enough, and what a real line costs.

What VoIP actually is

VoIP (voice over IP) means your phone calls travel over your internet connection instead of a dedicated phone line. Your business number stops living in a box on the wall and starts living in the cloud, which means it can ring a desk handset, a laptop and a mobile app at once, follow people home on a sick day, and greet callers with a proper menu ("press 1 for accounts") even if the whole company is four otters and a dog.

Why businesses switched

The number stays put. Move office, work from home, swap staff around: the number and its call flows come along, no technician visit required.

Costs stop surprising you. Old phone bills were a mystery novel of line rentals and call rates. A flat per-user price with calls included means the November bill looks like the March bill.

It grows and shrinks monthly. New starter, new line, same day. Someone leaves, the line goes, and so does its cost. That rhythm happens to match how the whole Otterly menu works: month-to-month, per person, no lock-in.

Honest question: isn't Teams enough?

Sometimes, yes. If your clients mostly email you, and calls are internal or scheduled, Teams calling on your existing Microsoft 365 licence does the job and costs nothing extra, and we'll happily tell you so. A dedicated VoIP line earns its keep when the phone is how customers reach you: a front desk, a support line, an "our number has been the same for 15 years" situation. Ring groups, hold music, call queues and a number that must never go missing are VoIP territory.

What it costs

On the Otterly menu, the voip all-included phone line is an optional add-on at $35 per user per month: a full business phone line per user: calls, handset app, the lot. No per-minute maths, no surprise November. Put it against your headcount in the calculator, and if you're also rethinking your internet, the same Connectivity section of the menu has a business NBN plan to pair it with.
